How shared spaces reveal more about yourself.

I've always thought I already know how to adjust living in a shared space. During my 5 years in college, I stayed in a dormitory with 5 more girls - sharing 1 room and 1 toilet. After graduating, I shared again a condo flat with college friends, and then moved out again and shared another condo flat with workmates. I admit, all those years combined, I had to make adjustments to live comfortably with other people. Filipino have a specific term for that: "pakikisama". And it's part of life, you also have to do it in school, in the workplace, and even on your own house, with your family.

Living in shared spaces teaches you a lot of things. Like how long someone's hair can clog a drain. Or how people pretend that they are not the last person to use the stove or microwave so they're not required to clean them. Or how absurdly specific people can get about kitchen cloth usage—yes, there’s a designated microfiber cloth for cleaning and a forbidden one that apparently comes with spiritual significance.

But mostly, shared spaces teach you things about yourself. Not the filtered version of yourself you post online or offer to coworkers in polite conversation. No, I mean the version of you that emerges when someone left used and unwashed plates in the kitchen sink for the whole day and now you can't help but wash them yourself.

You discover how much noise you can tolerate before you start fantasizing about burning the house down (quietly, of course). You figure out your emotional attachment to laundry schedules, how far your social battery really goes, and the deeply personal way you arrange items in the fridge and kitchen cupboard as a form of territorial dominance.

Living in a shared flat with people from your own country has its pros and cons. But living with other people from different country is quite a different story. Before my husband and I first moved into this shared flat with other nationalities, I thought I was adaptable. Reasonable. Laid-back. Fast-forward a few months, and I’m hiding in my room like a medieval hermit, cursing at a washing machine that lives in a bedroom I have to stealth-crawl through. I started noticing how “cozy” turned into “cluttered,” how framed photos started looking like surveillance, and how my internal monologue got progressively meaner.

Turns out, it’s not just about sharing space—it’s about sharing discomfort. You bump into people’s quirks, habits, and unresolved childhood traumas. And in doing so, you bump into yours.

But here's the twist: I'm still grateful for it. For all the weirdness, the passive-aggressive group chats, the awkward kitchen dances—weirdly, I came out knowing myself better. Less idealized. More human. Slightly more feral.

In a few weeks, we are leaving this place. The thought of a quieter, more private space is thrilling. But a part of me will always remember this flat as the place where I discovered that, apparently, I have a deep-seated emotional response to unwrapped bread kept in the plate cabinet.

Someday, I will leave this world

I was probably 8 or 9 years old the first time I had an awareness of death. I wanted to sleep but all I can think of was my grandparents and parents dying. I remember crying myself to sleep and it even went on for several nights after. I still didn't know how pray back then but I remember hoping that fearsome day will never come. They were overwhelming feelings for a child but I somehow managed to get through that fear.

Many years after, my grandfather's sister died. I was around 18 this time and processing the concept of death meant writing a poem about it. I wrote this poem 11 years ago and I still have the same sentiments on death. It's inevitable, one day it's going to be my turn.

Sometimes it just seems too unfair. Like when my youngest brother died, just after he was born. I have never been so heartbroken for someone who I just saw for a few minutes. And most of the times, even though we know that someday, death will surely happen, we still take life for granted. Like when my grandfather died 5 months ago and I was working abroad. All I could think about when I was at the plane going home, are my regrets of choosing to be away from the people I care about the most. It felt like time traveling 20 years ago, to when I was so afraid that either of my grandparents are dying.

I was taught of hope after death. That one day, we will meet again our loved ones on that beautiful and eternal place of peace. It's amazing how humans come up with ideas to cope.

Until then, I wish to keep this blog alive. Someday I will leave this world with a nonsense blog about my boring life in the 21st century.

It's Autumn Season!

I don't want to start this blog again with "I'm going to post a weekly blog starting today!" in a high-pitched, irritating voice.

I'm already very annoyed at myself wanting to start something then just immediately stops.

This blog has been like that for over a decade now. I've started too many writing prompts and challenges already and I don't think I have finished any of them.

But hey, at least for now, my blog is still alive BUT barely breathing (in the tune of Breakeven by The Script).

So, a quick update: It's the first of October and my second autumn season in Malta! But because I'm in a Mediterranean island, rusty-colored leaves falling from trees will not be common. Well, I'll just enjoy the cooler breeze after the scorching heat wave of summer.

I've been gatekeeping some cool spots here in Valletta. Never been to other countries in the EU except Italy, so I have to get the most of out this little island.

Some photos I took today:

Somewhere in Valletta

I had to go home early coz you know, nature called.

To the 20 year old me

These are the things I wish I can tell you:

Don’t give up on what you like doing the most. Be wary self, because you will be preoccupied by the chaos of earning and spending. Someday you will lose your poetic vocabulary, have shorter attention span, will cringe at your own creativity and will feel inferior in this competitive society. I wish I can go back in time and prepared you for all these. I know that writing is what’s keeping you sane and I think you’ve actually gone insane for not keeping up with it.

Time will fly too fast you could barely catch-up. But take a deep breath and just hang in there. Tomorrow is a day farther to your regrets and a day nearer to who you want to be.

Today I made a new friend

It’s not uncommon for a person like who lives and works in another country to meet new people and make friends with them. I actually already had a handful in a span of one year.

Watched the sunset with the new friend

But today it felt special.

Like a connection I never knew I wanted needed at that time. We’ve had a few dead air pauses in between our chats but it wasn’t too awkward. At least not for me.

I sound too cheesy writing this so I wouldn’t want her to know about this.

It was just an ichigo ichie moment for me.

It needed to be written down so I won’t forget.

Ate dinner afterwards

28 years realization

My mother was my age now when I was 10 years old. I don’t think I can handle my 10 years old self properly. I’m lucky to have the best mother!

1 month married today! (Week 3)

As the title goes... It's our first month of being married!

It's quite exciting but also a bit sad because we are away from each other. We both didn't want this and we can't say we don't have a choice. But, this is the path we took and we have to bear with it.

To be honest, I have been feeling anxious lately. Even though my husband and I have discussed the great responsibilities of being married, it's only just a few days ago that I fully realized the realit
y of it.

It's a life long commitment. Which does not only involve love, but also finances, career, personal struggles. It's one of the decisions we make in life that we cannot take back too easily.

I have fears for myself and for my husband, especially that we are very far from each other. But at the same time, I have complete faith in our relationship. We both are striving to be better persons. We both want each other to feel loved and cared for. We aren't perfect so we still have disagreements and misunderstandings. But we want to learn from them. We both want to get to know each other better so we know how we can fully support each other.

It's not easy, but we are not in a hurry; change does not happen overnight.

Golden sunset with Seneca

As I vowed 30 days ago:

Even if it takes a lifetime, I will go through this difficult process of learning how to selflessly love another imperfect person. And I will do it with my husband, Jet.

Week 2

I almost forgot that I have to post one blog weekly.

So.. what happened to me this week? Uhmm, boring as always.

This career path that I took is mundane and lifeless. Office work, laptop, sit for long hours, dry eyes.

What makes it interesting is finding errors and mistakes and analyzing unusual financial activity -- which only happened to be interesting because this is my work, you know. I don't like it from the start, but it pays good, so I have to like it.

Speaking of careers, I am recently been reading and listening podcasts about Stoicism. It's a branch of Philosophy which I still can't grasp entirely but so far, I like what I've been learning about it.

I realized then, just very recently, what if I study again and take another course? Like philosophy, then be a college professor?

I like philosophy.. the search for life's true meaning, how to acquire wisdom, how to be a good person.

Since I've been reading about Stoicism, I like that it teaches about living today as if it's your last day on earth. It makes me realize what's the most important thing I have to do in my life today. And somehow, even though I am a selfish human being, the most important thing that comes to my mind -- is expressing how I care and love the special people in my life. Hoping that I have left something in this world that they will somehow learn from and cherish their whole life.

Still a bit selfish, I think.

Anyway, moving on to a different topic...

This week I also tried to limit my use of my smartphone. I don't feel like there's a sense of accomplishment in scrolling endlessly on Intagram reels, except for getting ideas and templates on what to post later.

Society today has dictated its citizens that the internet requires us to be connected ALL THE TIME to each other. I know we are social beings but why should I succumb to this temptation? Is temptation the right word or maybe fiasco? I don't know.

I just hate the feeling of getting trapped. I know there is nothing wrong with people longing for validation. But, for me, it's just not very productive. BUT I AM ALWAYS GETTING CAUGHT. By Instagram most of the time. Facebook does not interest me, Tiktok most of all does not interest me. Youtube, not so much. But Instagram!! All these travels, photography, aesthetic lifestyle, literature, funny videos, cute pets. Ugh! They all make me envious yet at the same time idle because instead of finding and working on ways to achieve a "better life", I just scroll and swipe through it.

Anyway, I'm trying to be productive now, so I should stop being too hard on myself.

Somewhere in Mellieha while writing this

I'm reading books again, I'm going out on weekends to see the sunset, to meet friends. I exercise (a bit). I just need to push myself a little more to be more courageous, adventurous, brave. Go out of my comfort zone.

I am trying, and I'm proud of myself.

It was crazy week with all these crazy nonsense I'm writing.

I just hope this will do me some good in the future. Ciao! Till next week!

Life update ~~

I recently just got married! Just 17 days old.

Unfortunately, my husband and I have to be in a long-distance relationship TEMPORARILY.
And to make this kind of set-up work for the best (because that's what love requires- we have to make efforts), we tried to come up with a plan to do something together and we call it "Success Buddy".

It's a list of all the things we want to accomplish together. It's also like developing productive hobbies.

It's actually quite wholistic. If we stick to this plan, we will not only grow in our relationship but also other personal aspects.

It's very exciting for me.

So far, my list is this:

1. To read at least 2 books per month
2. Exercise/work-out at least 3x a week
3. Write one blog entry a week (that's why I'm back here after being on a hiatus for the longest time)
4. Eat at least one health meal a day
5. Learn a new language

We made a tracker of this list and then by the end of the month, a corresponding reward will be given to each other for each accomplishment.

I have high hopes that we will maintain this growth, steadily, until our list becomes a favorite hobby.

We will also try to limit unproductive habits especially browsing social media and watching Netflix.

Compound effect - is what my husband would advise. It's the small things we try to do each day that will make a difference.

I just want to write about this thought

That if I ever found out I have a terminal disease, I don't want people to know about it. Not even my family or Jet.

I want them to treat me the same.

No pity, no sympathy.

And then, I can still live my life as free as I want it to be (if my body can still handle it)

But then I thought, I don't need to wait having a terminal illness before living the life I want.

I should do it now.

Live life.

We only have one.

Going back

13 days to go before the end of Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) here in the Philippines. It has been over 2 months since the outbreak of Covid-19 started here and things are not the normal like it used to be.

It feels very strange writing again in my blog. Everything looks so familiar and nostalgic. I can only reminisce those times I was so active in blogging and that my comfort zone is here. And now, it feels very different. It seems like writing back here again is going out of my comfort zone. The past four years of my life (2016 -2019) was very thrilling. So far, it's the roller coaster part of my life that made me forget this little space of my life. And I quite regret it.

The world is very preoccupied today. I bet people nowadays find it very weird to blog since the most popular today is vlogging, which became a trend so fast that almost everyone likes to vlog! Sometime in the future, the term 'vlog' will be included in the dictionary.

Anyway, I am here again because it's still ECQ. And after all those weeks of being a bit productive (yes I've been productive, but that should be a different post), it's just today that I felt going back again to writing these kind of thoughts of mine.

I'm planning to do a 10-day challenge to properly get back here.

I'll have to take little steps again, so I won't feel overwhelmed and pressured.

Well it's just me who's pressuring me.

I hope I'll do well.

To anyone who's reading this, please stay safe, okay?

Just an old poem

It's this poem's 2nd year yesterday, yet it's just going to be published now.

This is dedicated to someone with whom I felt so many things. One of which is expressed through this poem.

Sometimes our hearts beat in tandem.

Like the perfect color combination of violet and blue in a red sunset;

Or like the matching taste of a dark chocolate drink with marshmallows;

Or like the harmozing duet of piano and violin playing in an orchestra.

And yet there are still times

That we find our hearts longing and lost.

Times when the red sunset begins to fade in the dark of the night;

When the afternoon rain becomes a thunderstorm that stirs up the tranquillity of the hour;

Or when the conductor finally faces the audience, signifying that music has now come to end.

There will be moments that our hearts

Will be confused and hurting.

But I hope they will always remember:

That morning comes after the night,

A rainbow always arches the sky after the storm,

And that beautiful music can be anywhere.

There is someone who can stay and will stay through it all.

Where are you?

Losing something that is so dear to you sucks.
I have kept it for so long, waiting for the right time to be used.
But the right time never came, so I decided to check if it's still safe.
Yet lo and behold, it's gone.
I tried so hard in looking for it.
But only traces were left, like its storage where I kept it.

You tell me just buy another one?
NO.
It can't be bought by ordinary not even expensive money,
neither it be exchanged with the most precious things in the world.
Do you feel me?
I'm not sure if you do.
But all I wish now is that it's not forever gone.
That one day, it'll just show up.
And if that time comes, I won't just keep and store it.

I will always use it.
And take care of it.

L'appel du vide

I have been experiencing anxiety and extreme sadness lately for almost quite a year now. I can't say that I have a mental disorder already since I haven't seen a doctor yet. But I know that I'm not okay, and this is not the usual me.

Right now, I feel so alone and so misunderstood. And I just don't know what to do with my life anymore. Dying could be the best choice, you know.

I don't know what's selfish with wanting to die when you're the root cause of why people get angry or worried; when you're the reason why they can't have peace of minds, or the reason why they can't do/achieve what they want in life. Dying is better than seeing them like these, right? At least when I'm gone, I'm one less stubborn person in their life. Finally, they could be happy. Finally, they don't have to think about that daughter/sibling/friend who's just a pain in their ass.

I'm tired of all these.

I hate life.

Mar 16, 2018

I need to get something off my chest

I have a nice life.

We are not rich but I can say I have never experienced lacking of anything.
We eat three or even more than three times a day.
My parents can buy me dresses and shoes that I like. (As long as we have budget for those)
We live in our own house and have our own family car.
I  graduated college from the university that I like.
I have an easy life.
A good life.

But why am I like this?
I am so discontented.
I want adventure.
I want to feel free.
I wanted to feel like I can do things and decide things on my own.

My family provided everything I have ever needed, even the things that I like.
Maybe I just want to live my own life now.

Nov 10, 2016

Totoo Ba?

Kailangan kong makaalis, kailangan kong tumakbo!

“Aa-aaaaahhh!!”

“Daris.

“Haha. Hindi ko ho pa oras kanina, Tay. Ok na ho ako ngayon. Kita niyo nga at nakakalakad na. May bago pala tayong kasama ngayon, oh.

Himala iyon, Tay!

“Akala mo lang kidlat yun. Hahaha! Walang nabubuhay matapos makidlatan, no.”

“Tatay Gil talaga.

“Maraming pwedeng maging rason.

“Good morning po Tatay Gil. Kumusta na po ang pakiramdam niyo?”

“Good morning, dok.

Random 106

It's the final quarter of 2016! Time flies so unpredictable! Yes, unpredictable. Because sometimes there were periods in my life where time was so much in a rush that I can hardly keep up with the happenings around me. BECAUSE it was the result of time just crawling that I just feel I had to procrastinate things. And I just explained a bit longer the cause and effect of being lazy and procrastination. Anyway, I'm so glad that I am soon to graduate college, after seven looooonngg years!! Finally, life!

I call a specific post of a mine a "random" one when I want to share just a sentence or a paragraph long about me. And nope, it's not the 106th random post, I just like to use one-zero-something because this is supposed to be leveling up. Like the courses you're taking in college, when you're still freshman, you're supposed to take first year courses like Math 101 then during sophomore year, because you leveled up, then you have to take second year courses like Math 201. I don't know why I'm taking too long explaining these trivial matters. I just missed my blog, that's all. And because I'm not leveling-up with my blogging style. I even feel so depreciated and impaired (whuuuuutt??)

Okay! Right now I am studying Law. Oh sorry, I WAS studying law before coming here and posting these senseless stuffs. And it's funny (it's funny for me, I'm laughing inside my head) because I had to pause for like three minutes before actually typing this sentence because my mom went out of her room and I'm afraid she might caught me not studying. HAHA. It's not really funny, I know.

Sometimes I just want to try going outside without actually bringing my phone. Because right now, a phone is just a big necessity for me. I feel so insufficient (I don't know if that's the right term) whenever I just go out for a short walk without my phone. I hate that I'm like this now. I survived high school without a phone now it's just too difficult.

I'm always on twitter and instagram though I don't always post. I'm just there, reading, looking, watching, and liking stuffs. And it consumes so much of my time. I seriously need to go social media fasting again. I tried this once but I failed, sadly.

This post is so selfish, everything is about me.

I don't know if I have mentioned in my previous posts that I changed again my blog url and my blog title. From not-really-an-arcane.blogspot.com to shewrotesomethingtoday.blogspot.com. Because the truth is, my previous url is grammatically wrong. HAHA. I've learned about that a few days after using that phrase but of course because I just used it, I don't want to change it again. So I had to bear for a few years the grammatical error but I got used to it as time passed by. And then, this year, I finally had a new and good idea for a new url so I changed it right away. That's why, I don't really have readers now. Because I am not sharing yet to anyone this new url.

And the blog title! Yes! From , "a twerp" to "a reverie". Twerp means innocent, simple, stupid or fool. I think I was 16 when I used this word about me. And I just feel so bad knowing that this is how I see myself. I don't what's with me during that time. But MAYBE, I was using the word twerp with the context of being innocent. Yeah, I hope so. Because I really don't remember anymore my reason why I used "a twerp".

So what's with, "a reverie"? Reverie means a state of being pleasantly lost in one's thoughts (thanks Google). I am really not a talkative person. Well, I am a bit talkative but only with a really few and really close people. And most of the time, I have so many unsaid words. Because, you know that feeling when you think your opinions wouldn't matter because these people around you are so witty and they just think and express so good and so intellectual. So I end up keeping to myself what I am thinking. And I think that's the very reason why I am still keeping this blog. I had to express those thoughts because I never know when they could become handy someday. So far, they aren't handy.

But on a serious note, one good thing that I have observed with keeping this blog for years now is that, I have seen how I am growing. I have somehow kept a record of things that I've learned, of things I have realized about my life. I have seen my struggles and how I've overcame them. And it's really good too see changes and I that am becoming a better person (I hope so). So, in reverie, in a daydream, I once thought of these things and I don't want them to be lost forever. I want them to be found.

I am trying to find clarity
In this obscure world
Where life goes to death,
Choices lead to mistakes,
Love involves pain.

The curtain is still unfolded,
The windows are foggy,
The lines are blurry.
I wonder,
Would lucidity someday enfold?
